an interesting commentary, rare and one of its kind, made on the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton as a comparison to the controversial customary lavish practices of walimahs~

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Just have to share what I find really beautiful (aside from the gorgeous bride) about the recent, much hyped royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton:
A large portion of the ceremony was held in Westminster Abbey, the church where the solemnisation was held.
Note: Nope. Not on a wedding dais, for the eyes of more strangers than couple’s loved ones. When the world’s eyes are on them, they choose to spend the first few seconds of their marriage surrounded by faith.
The solemnisation ceremony was followed by a speech by the archbishop (or someone from the church) on marriage; roles, responsibilities, etc.
Note: Personally? Such a great way to start your marriage! To be reminded of how best to positively contribute to the relationship, as taught by your faith, serving to remind the guests at the same time.
Only a total of 300 guests, consisting of the couple’s family and close friends, were invited for dinner.
Note: Not 1,000, with 3/4 of the guests being people the couple barely know (hence, due to limited interaction, them not being able to entirely share the couple’s joy, making the invite pointless, no?).
The bride made herself up for the wedding!
Note: With nearly 23 million viewers worldwide! This not only speaks of confidence, but mostly of modesty and the willingness to try cheaper alternatives, even if one has all the money in the world to spend.
From pictures, the bride seems to appear in only two different wedding gowns. One for the solemnisation ceremony, and another for the dinner.
Note: Not four. Or five. And… This is the Duchess of Cambridge, we’re talking about.
It got me thinking. This is the prince of the most popular monarchy in the world! Aside from the reported amount spent… The service isn’t as extravagant as one would expect. Instead, the affair seems really simple and intimate. Maybe, it’s time we question some cultural practices, and remind ourselves of the purpose of weddings. I don’t have a problem with spending for once-in-a-lifetime events, really. But costs are rising at a far more significant rate than pay slips, and efforts must be made to maintain some sort of balance between income and expenditure.
I am obviously, an inexperienced bride. But I’d like to believe that weddings should also be about living within my means, rather than meeting the society’s expectations. It should be a day filled with meaning and joy, not one that physically drains and mentally challenges… Especially so, for the couple and their loved ones.
May He guide us all, towards a walimah and most importantly, marriage that will be showered with His endless blessings, InsyaAllah.
